Girls’ Day at the Capitol promotes women’s participation in government and leadership positions

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – More than 100 young women were at the Alabama Capitol on Tuesday to learn more about what a career in state politics means.

It was part of an event called “Girls’ Day at the Capitol,” an initiative by state Rep. Susan DuBose, R-Hoover, to encourage young women to get involved in state government and learn about leadership opportunities.

DuBose teamed up with Miss Alabama Teen Ali Mims to invite girls in sixth through 12th grade from across the state to interact with and ask questions of elected officials and tour the Capitol and Governor’s Mansion.

“So often we see men in these roles, and I want them to know that they can do it,” DuBose said.

“Although Alabama currently has a second female governor, a female U.S. senator and 24 female members of the Alabama Legislature, our state still ranks 47th in the nation with only 18% of legislators being women,” she said. “Women bring a unique perspective and different issues, initiatives and priorities to public service, and it is important to us to encourage future generations of young women to get involved in government and make their voices heard.”

Girls from across the state in grades 6-12 will visit elected leaders and tour the Alabama Capitol Building and the Governor’s Mansion.

Mims said she became involved as an event director after participating last year Opening event. She said it’s important for the next generation to see that there are positive ways to advocate for causes they care about.

“It is eye-opening to see how women can be represented in their state governments. I know that as a participant in the Miss America Organization, I know how passionate women are and I know how ambitious they are and when they find a problem, they will fight to solve that problem. said Mims.
