But today the head of a Google division released a detailed report on a key project his team has been working on.

This report is based on a new chip that has been trending since Google announced it. Every time a leading technology company announces a new chip, it’s natural to wonder whether the next big AI breakthrough is on the horizon. While it’s true that Google’s latest innovation is likely to have a significant impact on AI development, it actually comes from a different department.

In fact, the man behind it is a computer scientist who left the field of AI to focus on another area of technology.

Google has a new chip that could prove transformative for the tech sector.

Who is the author of the new Google report that is driving up stock prices? Hartmut Neven is the founder and head of Google Quantum AI, a research division focused on revolutionizing modern computing. In the report, Neven explained how his team has taken a major step in this direction with the release of Willow, described as a cutting-edge quantum computing chip.

The term “quantum computing” has been trending quite a bit lately, as companies report progress in the field and receive praise from Wall Street analysts. While a standard computer completes tasks step by step, quantum computing systems can perform multiple steps at once, solving problems much more quickly.

These systems use quantum bits (qubits) of information to solve complex problems much faster than conventional computers, leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics.

Fellow tech giant Honeywell Industries has vowed that quantum computing technology has the potential to transform many industries, and Google could do just that. In the report, Neven emphasizes that Willow will enable two key achievements.

First, it can significantly reduce errors, which overcomes “a key challenge in quantum error correction.” Second, the chip performed a “standard benchmark calculation” in less than five minutes, which Neven said would take more than a decade on the fastest supercomputers available today.

Neven has worked in both AI and quantum computing. Although he believes both are destined to become “the most transformative technologies of our time,” he emphasizes that advanced AI systems will benefit significantly from the quantum computing revolution.
