Gourde and Schwartz lead Kraken to 4-2 win over Hurricanes

RALEIGH, North Carolina – Yanni Gourde and Jaden Schwartz each had a goal and an assist, and the Seattle Kraken snapped a three-game skid to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 on Tuesday night.

Gourde’s wrist shot at 10:48 of the third period tied the game at 2-2. Brandon Tanev and Eeli Tolvanen also scored for Seattle and Matty Beniers added two assists. Joey Daccord stopped 15 shots.

Eric Robinson and Martin Necas scored for the Hurricanes, who lost their third straight game. Necas added an assist to improve his team-high total to 39. The Hurricanes finished the season with a season-low 16 shots. Pyotr Kochetkov made 24 saves in his first start after missing four games with a concussion.

Kraken: Typically it is the Hurricanes who dominate puck possession and significantly outscore their opponents. Seattle controlled the game on Tuesday and was particularly effective in the second period with a 14-2 shooting advantage. It was only the second time this season that the Kraken were able to stop their opponent by fewer than 20 shots.

Hurricanes: Kochetkov’s return should stabilize the goalkeeping situation. After giving up Schwartz’s goal 19 seconds into the game, he calmed down. Kochetkov missed four games after suffering a concussion in a shootout loss in Columbus on Nov. 23. The Hurricanes took a 2-2 lead without Kochetkov. Since the 4-1 win in Seattle on October 26th, they have been without top goalkeeper Frederik Andersen, who injured his knee. Andersen is expected to be out for another six to 10 weeks.

At 10:02 of the third period, Jack Drury’s goal for Carolina was negated due to a successful goalkeeper interference challenge by the coach. Fifty seconds later, Gourde beat Kochetkov to give Seattle a 3-2 lead.

The Kraken improved to 7-1-1 when scoring first this season.

The Kraken continue their four-game road trip at the New York Islanders and the Hurricanes against Colorado, both on Thursday night.
