Former Arizona news anchor Kari Lake is President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to become the next director of Voice of America, the federally funded media company that targets an international audience.

It wasn’t immediately clear what Lake’s role at the agency would be, but she took to social media to describe the medium as “promoting democracy and truth.”

She also noted VOA’s extensive reach abroad. “Under my leadership, VOA will excel in its mission: to chronicle America’s achievements around the world,” Lake wrote.

Here’s a look at what VOA is doing and what it could look like under Lake’s leadership.

Trump will nominate someone to head the U.S. Agency for Global Media, whose six-member, Senate-confirmed board must approve the VOA director’s choice.

VOA’s global mission is to distribute multimedia news from the United States

According to the station’s website, Voice of America served as the U.S. government’s international broadcaster and was distributed to more than 354 million people in nearly 50 languages.

VOA was integrated as part of the US Agency for Global Media and funded with taxpayer money.

The station is governed by the VOA Charter, which was codified by President Gerald Ford in 1976 and permanently established the news station’s journalistic and editorial freedom.

It included the statement that “VOA news will be accurate, objective and comprehensive… (and) represent a balanced and comprehensive projection of significant American thought and institutions.”

VOA is headquartered in Washington DC, where their radio and television studios were also located. It’s unclear whether Lake would move there.

How Kari Lake’s leadership might take shape

It was also unclear whether Lake, who appeared on Phoenix’s Fox 10 News for years, would take on broadcasting duties in addition to his executive duties.

As VOA’s new director, Kari Lake would likely earn a six-figure salary.

USAGM was required to submit a congressional budget justification report describing the current goals and financial needs of VOA and other state media outlets.

In 2023, nearly $6,500,000 was allocated to the VOA Director’s Office, which was also responsible for funds used for resource management, research and outreach, according to the report.

VOA’s executive director earned an average annual salary of about $150,000 in 2024, according to online job finder Glassdoor.
