SANTA CLARA – In the 49ers’ 38-18 victory over the Chicago Bears, rookie running back Isaac Guerendo had a minor scare and left the game in the fourth quarter with a foot injury.

When Kyle Shanahan submitted his postgame injury report, he addressed Guerendo’s status.

“We’re not sure if an ankle sprain is a possibility,” Shanahan said. “The x-rays certainly didn’t show anything, so we’ll have to look into it a little more tomorrow.”

Guerendo spoke in the locker room after the game and seemed less concerned than his coach.

“Everything is fine,” Guerendo said. “They were just being careful. We made a quick turnaround this week so we just need to make sure we’re ready to go.”

It was Guerendo’s first NFL start and only his second official start since beginning his college career. The Louisville product led the team with 15 carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns, along with two receptions for 50 yards.

The rookie praises running backs coach Bobby Turner for his ability to step in so quickly as the 49ers’ lead back after both Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason were sidelined with injuries in Week 13.

“Coach T prepares us so well that I can stay calm in a situation like that,” Guerendo said. “It’s definitely a crazy statistic, the second career start talks about college and the NFL.”

Amazingly, Guerendo was a wide receiver throughout his high school football career from fifth grade and wasn’t asked to commit to the running back role until he enrolled at Wisconsin in 2018.

“I thought Isaac looked really good today,” Shanahan said. “He ran hard, affected the passing game and we hope we get some good news on his injury. That’s why I had mixed feelings on the last ride. It was nice to have a 14-play drive, end it with a touchdown and kind of put them away, but it was tough today losing Isaac.”

Kyle Shanahan will speak to the media on Monday afternoon to provide updates on player injuries from the game.
