Hawkeyes hold on for their tenth win

Hawkeyes hold on for their tenth win

8:26 p.m. CT December 20, 2024

FINAL: 92-86 Iowa

GusMartin

Even though things got a bit dicey in the final frame, Iowa regrouped late, held on and won its tenth game of the season.

UNI gave the Hawkeyes a tough test, led by Maya McDermott with 30 points.

Iowa was led by Lucy Olsen with 21 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

Q4 13.3, 89-86 Iowa – UNI is not dead yet

UNI scored a triple and made it a one possession game.

Q4 20.2, 89-83 Iowa – Execution of the Hawkeyes

GusMartin

Iowa showed everything down the home stretch and seemed to build a lead big enough to secure the win.

Some free throws and plays from Hannah Stuelke put Iowa in a more comfortable situation.

Q4 1:30, 85-81 Iowa – Until the end

GusMartin

McCabe and Olsen ran the offense down the stretch, while Maya McDermott had up to 30 points for UNI.

This game has turned into a great battle for the “state championship”.

Q4 6:44, 74-70 Iowa – We have a game!

GusMartin

Even though it looked like Iowa was going to get away early, UNI kept fighting and kept the game close as we approached crunch time.

One of the Hawkeyes’ problems this half was fouling. They sent the Panthers to the line 14 times, including 10 times after shooting just six free throws in the first half.

Iowa, on the other hand, only shot 10 free throws in the game.

The UNI guard tandem has also begun to take power.

End 3: 70-62 Iowa – The Hawkeyes go cold

GusMartin

Iowa didn’t score for nearly three minutes to end that frame. Taylor McCabe did a good job of keeping the Hawkeyes afloat tonight, going 4-5 from deep.

Addison O’Grady and Hannah Stuelke were neutralized in the quarter. Iowa needs to find a way to dominate the game again or really buckle down defensively and maintain its cushion. UNI’s guards have gotten going and have the momentum.

F3 4:42, 62-55 Iowa – Who will fill in for Hawkeyes?

GusMartin

It’s Lucy Olsen or bust in this quarter for the Hawkeyes. Only one other player fired a shot.

Iowa must find a way to recapture the team-oriented offense it employed early in the game.

But we thank UNI for their renewed commitment to defense and for not rolling over.

7:40 p.m. CT December 20, 2024

Q3 5:49, 60-51 Iowa – UNI fights back

GusMartin

UNI capitalized on a couple of big runs early in this third quarter to cut its deficit to single digits.

Iowa, meanwhile, has already committed four turnovers in less than five minutes and can’t get anyone going other than Lucy Olsen, who has scored all seven of the Hawkeyes’ points so far in the game.

You have to slow down, feed the big guys and take care of the ball.

The second half is underway!

GusMartin

Action has resumed on the court as the Hawkeyes look to close out this game.

7:16 p.m. CT December 20, 2024

Halftime: 53-37 Iowa – It’s the O’Grady Show!

GusMartin

Addison O’Grady may have had her best half of the season. She scored a total of 12 points, including 10 in the second quarter.

Between her and Hannah Stuelke and to some extent Sydney Affolter, Iowa has a significant advantage in pain and should continue to take advantage of it.

The Hawkeyes also dominate with a 23-13 lead.

Overall, a very encouraging half for the Hawkeyes.

7:08 p.m. CT December 20, 2024

Q2 4:59, 35-23 Iowa – Panthers wake up

GusMartin

A 6-0 UNI run forced a Jan Jensen timeout.

Iowa is still playing well, but the Panthers have now started hitting some threes and may have gotten a boost in energy and confidence.

The Hawkeyes need to regroup and keep pushing.

7:01 p.m. CT December 20, 2024

Q2 7:48, 32-14 Iowa – Hawkeyes roll

GusMartin

A quick 9-2 run by Iowa early in the second frame forced another UNI timeout.

It looks like the Hawkeyes want to end this game early (Christmas pun intended).

Addison O’Grady, Hannah Stuelke and Teagan Mallegni all lead with six points.

6:54 p.m. CT December 20, 2024

End 1: 23-12 Iowa – Always Hawkeyes

GusMartin

Almost every Hawkeye that has played so far has scored, but the Hawkeyes were a little cold from the floor in the final half of the frame.

Still, Iowa set the tone early and is in full control. UNI tried to change that through a press defense and the Hawkeyes seem unfazed. It’s also good to see that Iowa only committed three turnovers despite the increased defensive pressure that gave the team a boost earlier this season.

6:39 p.m. CT December 20, 2024

Q1 5:58, 12-6 Iowa – Hawkeyes come out strong

GusMartin

Great start for Iowa as Lucy Olsen made a good mid-range shot and Hannah Stuelke made a great pass to Sydney Affolter for a 3-pointer.

Stuelke then made his presence felt on the offensive glass and parried a missed triple from Kylie Feuerbach for a putback layup. Stülke could be in for a big night.

Then Taylor McCabe came off the bench and hit a quick three-pointer.

All around a great start for Jan Jensen’s group.
