Here are the lyrics Eminem rapped about his mother, Debbie Nelson

Eminem’s mother, Debbie Nelson, died at the age of 69 billboard confirmed the tragedy on Tuesday (December 3).

TMZ was the first to report the news, as the publication noted that Nelson suffered complications related to a lung cancer diagnosis and died in St. Joseph, Missouri.

The oldest of five children, Nelson gave birth to a future rap phenomenon, Marshall Mathers III, as a teenager on October 17, 1972. The relationship between Eminem and his mother had been complicated and turbulent over the years. He had no problem incorporating parts of their relationship into his music, referencing Nelson in tracks like “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” “My Name Is” and others.

Nelson even sued Em for defamation in 1999, demanding $11 million. Per ABC NewsA judge ruled in her favor, but for only $25,000, and she benefited less than that amount after legal fees.

“One of the things I’ve said and realized is that at the end of the day, she’s my mother and I love her because she’s a mother,” Em said on BET 106 & Park in 2009. “I mean, even though we don’t really talk, she’s my mother. I really love her and I think I’ve gotten a better understanding of what she’s been through or what she might be going through now that I see myself and know what I’ve actually become. I think there’s a little compassion factor that comes with it.”

Over the years, Em began to understand what his mother was going through, and he brought that into his music, extending an olive branch on “Headlights” in 2013, expressing regret for how he handled certain things, and apologized to Nelson.

Things seemed to be going better between the two more recently. Nelson publicly showed her son some love on the day of Eminem’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. “Marshall, I couldn’t let this day pass without congratulating you on your induction into the Hall of Fame,” she said in a commentary video. “I love you very much. I knew you could do it. And it was a long drive.”

Here are 10 songs Eminem wrote that touch on his relationship with his mother.
