Here's how to spend a 15-minute break during the movie "The Brutalist."

It’s been decades since American moviegoers have had the opportunity to experience a break, but Brady Corbet and his The brutalist will break that dormant tradition when the A24 epic hits theaters on December 20th. A 15-minute intermission separates the film’s two chapters, “The Enigma of Arrival” and “The Hard Core of Beauty”, reducing the film’s total running time to three hours and 35 minutes.

The brutalist The film stars Adrien Brody as László Tóth, a Jewish-Hungarian architect trying to rebuild his life in the United States after the Holocaust. Felicity Jones (as Tóth’s wife Erzsébet Tóth), Alessandro Nivola (as Tóth’s cousin Attila), Guy Pearce (as the wealthy Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr.), Joe Alwyn (as Harry Lee) and Isaach De Bankolé (as Tóth’s unlikely friend) . ) round out the cast.

“The nice thing is that you have a moment to think. Or go to the bathroom and grab a piece of candy – whatever you want. I think it’s a moment to sit in the silence and darkness and have a powerful image as you reflect on a chapter and let it sink in before a new chapter unfolds. It’s something very special and beautiful and makes the experience feel like an event, especially in a theater.”

“You have a variety of options. You can have a cup of tea, you can have a cigarette, you can have a drink, you can have a conversation with the person you are watching the movie with. “Well, pee, depending on the condition of your prostate. What I like about it is that it gives you a chance to think about the film a bit and settle in before the second half begins. But the sky is the limit. If you want to go out and do calisthenics or a little yoga, I’m all for it.”

“The music during the break is something very special. It’s by pianist John Tilbury, with whom I worked for the more melancholic moments after László Tóth (Adrien Brody). The break is a beautiful moment where you can hear the pianist writing notes on his staff and you can hear the creaking of his piano shutter. You can see Erzsébet’s theme emerging. He tries to work out their theme in the film, because László’s theme develops into Erzsébet’s. I would say to the audience: sit down. Sit in your seat. I don’t have a cigarette. Don’t go to the toilet. Just listen.”

“The first thing they probably want to do is take a breath. It’s a very daring film with a lot of emotions. Processing takes a moment. I would suggest that they take some time to really think about the film, take it in for a moment and tune in to the second half. Having a break is a really, really interesting idea, so enjoy it.”
