Hill Air Force Base confirms reports of drones over Davis County airspace

Military officials have confirmed that “unmanned aerial systems,” or drones, have been spotted near Hill Air Force Base.

Mysterious drone sightings have sparked widespread concern in the United States, with military experts warning of potential security risks.

A New York airport has temporarily closed its runways after drone sightings in the east.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, Hill AFB officials confirmed the sightings near Davis County Air Force Base.

They said the drones did not hit the base.

“We can confirm that unmanned aerial systems were recently spotted near Hill AFB. To date, unmanned aerial systems have had no impact on Hill AFB operations and all appropriate measures are being taken to protect Hill AFB personnel, assets and infrastructure,” the statement said.

Military operations confirm that they are closely monitoring our airspace – and community members are keeping an eye on it too.

MORE on drone sightings:

Hill AFB and the National Guard training site Camp Williams in Bluffdale confirmed they have received reports of drones near their deployment locations.

Camp Williams officials said the reports were minor drone sightings in recent months.

Meanwhile, Hill AFB previously said no drones had been seen at the base before confirming the sightings.

“We continue to monitor the airspace and work with local authorities to track the unmanned aircraft systems,” officials said. “To ensure operational security, we do not discuss specific measures to protect the armed forces, but we reserve the right to protect our facilities.”

Officials have asked anyone who sees anything suspicious near the base, including drones, to contact local police or Hill AFB security forces.

Drone operators have also been warned not to fly their personal devices away from the base to avoid an encounter with an aircraft.

“The use of personal drones on the base poses a significant threat to aircraft,” an official said in an article posted on the base’s website. “For those interested in flying their drones off-base, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provides extensive resources to help them fly legally and safely.”

They instructed drone operators to use the “B4UFLY” app to enable safe flying.

Maj. Michael Ditto, spokesman for Camp Williams, said there have been cases where guards reported seeing a drone near the facility.

“The two recent cases I can point to were soldiers walking around a suitcase and asking, ‘Hey, there’s a drone. What is she doing?’” he said.

Major Ditto said all reports of nearby activity had been reported. They investigated recent reports.

“They are being investigated,” he said. “In fact, the few drone sightings that we have had near or within our airspace are immediately reported, not only to local law enforcement, but they are also escalated to a higher level of investigation within the state and federal government.”
