TODAY’S TOP STORY:

Holiday travel has been in full swing across the country and in San Diego for several days, but Friday is expected to be quite busy on the roads and in the air.

San Diego International Airport officials said the holiday rush began Thursday and is expected to last through Jan. 5. Officials estimate that up to 80,000 people will be at the airport every day during this period.

ABC 10News was at San Diego International Airport early Friday morning as fog in the area caused numerous flight delays and some cancellations.

Travelers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Visit https://www.san.org/flights/flight-status to check arrivals and departures at San Diego International Airport.

Some good news for travelers: Under a new federal rule, airlines must automatically provide refunds to those whose flights are delayed by more than three hours domestically or more than six hours internationally.

Travelers need to be vigilant and monitor messages from their airlines to ensure they receive a refund if they are eligible.

Hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding intended to help address the cross-border wastewater crisis are at stake Friday as federal lawmakers work on a deal to avoid a government shutdown.

Earlier this week, Congress appropriated the final $250 million needed to repair the International Wastewater Treatment Plant in the South Bay in a recent spending bill.

However, President-elect Trump urged Republicans to reject the proposal, so Congress scrambled to come up with a new plan that would prevent a government shutdown.

Reporter Perla Shaheen further explains how the potential closure could cause final repairs to slow down.
