Hopes are high for Sam LaPorta’s resurgence after the big Thanksgiving game

A year after developing into one of the best young tight ends in the world, Sam LaPorta is struggling to make a consistent impact with the Detroit Lions in 2024.

Before Week 13, it had been a rough year for LaPorta, who had never thrown for more than 100 yards in a single game this season, compared to once last season. Additionally, LaPorta only has one multiple-touchdown game to his name, compared to two last year. It’s safe to say he didn’t leave such an impression.

All of this has led some to wonder what’s going on with Detroit’s offense. Yahoo!’s Charles Robinson Sports recently questioned whether LaPorta is seeing enough targets to make the difference he has in the past.

LaPorta came off the mat on Thanksgiving Day against the Chicago Bears and hauled in two touchdown catches to once again establish himself as a key figure in the Lions’ offense.

Whatever the reason for LaPorta’s regular absence this season, it’s clear after the game against the Bears that the arrow could be pointing up the rest of the way.

LaPorta has been banged up for most of this season, suffering a hamstring injury in training camp and an ankle injury early in the season before the shoulder problem.

After the two-touchdown game on Thanksgiving, head coach Dan Campbell made a statement about LaPorta’s health.

Quarterback Jared Goff shared Campbell’s sentiments and he understands the importance of getting a healthier LaPorta going.

“Yeah, that was good. (We had) a couple of good games against him and he came out open in both cases and (I) gave him credit straight away. “He’s a good player and at this point he’s finally coming back to himself,” and it feels good.

The hope is that Thanksgiving Day gives LaPorta confidence to get through the rest of the season. If so, it’s possible he can get back to the performance he had as a rookie.
