How Much Snow to Expect in Erie County, Pennsylvania in Recent Lake Effect Storm?

A lake effect snow advisory is in effect for Erie County through Friday morning, with heavy snow, strong winds and light wind chills expected.
The heaviest snowfall is forecast in the northern part of the county, with amounts of 6 to 12 inches expected and up to 16 inches in some areas.

The National Weather Service Cleveland snow advisory for Erie County is extended through 7 a.m. Friday

The weather service notes that travel may be difficult at times, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has activated vehicle restrictions on highways in northwestern Pennsylvania.

How much lake effect snow will Erie County get?

The weather service predicts up to 9 inches of new accumulation

Lake-made snow over Lake Erie is expected to become heavier and shift onshore Thursday morning. The heaviest snowfall is forecast across the northern county, with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour expected through early afternoon.

McKean, 4 inches to 8 inches
Northeast, 5 inches to 9 inches
Union City, one inch to 3 inches
Waterford, 3 inches to 5 inches
Wattsburg, 3 inches to 5 inches

The band of snow is expected to move offshore by the evening, although lighter snow is forecast for Thursday evening.

The weather service said winds would reach gusts of up to 40 miles per hour and push wind chills to single digits or near zero. AccuWeather’s RealFeel composite index suggests conditions will feel like they will be below zero during the day Thursday.

The weather service in Cleveland is calling for heavy snow showers at times, possibly accumulating to 5 to 9 inches in Erie. With westerly winds 21 to 30 mph, widespread snow is expected. The maximum temperature will be around 25 degrees.

Another 2 to 4 inches of snow is forecast for Thursday night, when the low will be around 18.

Snow showers are most likely before 10 a.m. Friday. Accumulation of up to an inch of snow is possible. The high will be around 26 and the low will be around 17.

Saturday is expected to be partly sunny, with a high of around 38°C and a low of around 31°C. The maximum temperature in the advance forecast is at least 38 °C every day until Tuesday.

● Crawford County is under a winter weather advisory until 7 a.m. Friday. The weather service in Cleveland says additional accumulations of 3 to 5 inches of lake effect snow are possible, with the heaviest snowfall in the north through early Thursday afternoon.

Interstate restrictions in northwestern Pennsylvania

PennDOT’s Tier 3 weather-related vehicle restrictions are in effect in Erie County on I-86 from the New York State Line to the I-90 interchange and I-90 from the New York Line to the Ohio State Line. No commercial vehicles are permitted other than loaded single trailers with chains or approved alternative traction devices. School buses, public transport buses, coaches, motorcycles, motorhomes and passenger vehicles with trailers are not permitted during current restrictions.

Chautauqua County could see several feet of snow

The Weather Service in Buffalo has a lake effect snow warning in effect for Chautauqua County and surrounding areas in New York until 1 p.m. Friday

Heavy lake snow is forecast, reaching 2 to 3 feet in places, particularly in the western portion of Chautauqua County. Snow is expected to fall in relatively narrow bands; A driver could quickly encounter varying road conditions and visibility. Whiteout conditions may occur at times.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in parts of Western New York. The New York State Thruway Authority has temporarily banned tandem and empty semi-trucks in both directions on I-90 from Exit 53 West to the Pennsylvania state line.
