How much will Tennessee’s Josh Heupel make for leading the Vols to the playoffs?

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Tennessee head football coach Josh Heupel can expect a hefty salary for leading the Vols to the College Football Playoff.

WVLT News delved into his contract to take a look at what he has earned so far this season and what he can earn if the Vols continue to perform well.

Heupel can expect a bonus of $200,000 just for getting into a first-round playoff game. However, it doesn’t stop there; Heupel can earn more if the Vols continue to win.

As part of his recent contract extension, the bonuses are as follows:

  • Winning the CFP National Championship Game: $1,000,000
  • CFP National Championship Game Appearance: $400,000
  • Appearance in the CFP semifinal game: $300,000
  • Participation in a CFP quarterfinal game (New Year’s 6): $250,000
  • Attending a first round CFP game: $200,000
  • Attending a Bowl Game: $100,000

Heupel also receives bonuses for polls such as AP, USA Today and coaches polls. These bonuses look like this:

  • Top 5 ranking in the AP, USA Today/Coaches or CFP poll: $150,000
  • Top 10 ranking in the AP, USA Today/Coaches or CFP poll: $100,000
  • Top 25 ranking in the AP, USA Today/Coaches or CFP poll: $50,000

However, the top volume only receives one bonus in each category. For example, Heupel secured the first-round bonus of $200,000, but he will not receive the bonus of $100,000 below.

In addition to these bonuses, there are smaller bonuses, such as those for Coach of the Year awards and academic progress rates.

Of course, all of these bonuses are combinable with Heupel’s base salary ($275,000) and additional salary (maximum of $8,725,000, depending on the university’s broadcast, advertising and consulting contracts).

Heupel’s contract runs until January 31, 2029.
