The Hurricanes got a big win on the road
Hobart is knocking on the door of the BBL top four after beating Adelaide by 11 runs.
After Ben McDermott’s unbeaten 68 took the Hurricanes to an impressive 5-214 at the Adelaide Oval on Friday night, the Strikers sprinted out of the starting blocks but fell to 6-203 thanks to excellent fielding and bowling from the visitors down the stretch.
The win catapulted the Hurricanes past the Strikers and Sydney Thunder into fifth place.
Hobart was the only team to score more than 200 points this season and the fourth highest points total in the team’s history – three of which came in Adelaide.
McDermott broke his bat after hitting his second six, before taping over the crack and hitting three more maximums in a swirling 34-ball knock.
Last weekend’s leader, Mitchell Owen (8), lost in the first round before opening partner Caleb Jewell (22) followed suit.
West Indies ODI captain Shai Hope impressed with 37 before being overrun by a Jamie Overton bumper which he mistakenly hit backwards where a retreating Lloyd Pope took a superb diving catch.
Tim David scored a quick 33 in a 54-run stand with McDermott as the Canes scored 88 in the last six overs.
Overton (2-27) was the clear top player for the Strikers with the ball.
Captain Matt Short (52), D’Arcy Short (41), Ollie Pope (39) and Overton (30) led the Strikers, who scored 105 in the first nine overs but couldn’t quite keep up with the difficult offering .
The two shorts put on a blistering 76 for the first wicket before D’Arcy holed out and Chris Lynn (19) followed.
Matt Short added to his 14th BBL half-century score with a monster six against Billy Stanlake before being brought down by a remarkable catch from his counterpart Nathan Ellis, who backed away from extra cover and juggled a remarkable catch that gave him fell from his chest when he fell.
After Alex Ross (8) fell on a wonderful flying catch from a horizontal Tim David, Ollie Pope tamely beat fellow Englishman Chris Jordan to Stanlake before Overton’s fireworks in the 20th over against Riley Meredith mitigated the run-rate damage somewhat .
