IAM Union Local 498 and other Rail Union members raise ,300 in 8 hours to support toys for toddlers

In an incredible show of generosity and teamwork, IAM Union Local 498, who proudly serve as machinists on the Metra commuter railroad, joined with members of the Brotherhood Railway Carmen Division (BRC), American Railway Supervisors Association (ARASA), and Transportation Communications Union Together (TCU/IAM), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers – Mechanical (SMART-Mech) and the National Conference of Firemen & Oilers (NCFO, SEIU) to make a difference in their community this holiday season. This coalition of railroad workers raised an impressive $1,300 in just eight hours and used the funds to purchase 18 brand new bicycles for the Toys for Tots program.

Led by local chairman Dave May, the effort showcased the unity and compassion of rail workers across industries and demonstrated their commitment to keeping the trains running and giving back to the communities they serve.

“We wanted to do something that would make a real difference,” said Chairwoman May. “A bike is more than just a toy – it’s a chance for a child to have fun, make discoveries and experience a bit of freedom and adventure . Knowing that 18 children will wake up with a bike this Christmas is an incredible feeling.”

Collaboration between unions underlines the shared values of solidarity and community engagement that define the labor movement. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program has a long history of bringing Christmas joy to underprivileged children. The involvement of union members across Metra’s workforce added an additional layer of goodwill to the effort.

“This was a team effort and a testament to the strong bond we share as railroaders,” added Rob Shanahan, a SMART-Mechanical representative. “When we come together we can do incredible things.”

The railroad unions’ donation is a shining example of how the labor movement continues to strengthen communities while advocating for workers’ rights. It reminds us that the spirit of giving goes beyond craft and title.

Great job for IAM Union Local 498 and all participating unions! Your contributions truly embody the spirit of giving and the values of solidarity.
