“If you don’t let me talk…”: Sanjay Manjrekar, Irfan Pathan in heated debate over Jaiswal run-out

India seemed to have fought back on Day 4 of the 4th Test against Australia when Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli put up a beautiful 102-run partnership for the third wicket. However, a terrible mix-up between Jaiswal and Kohli cost the former his wicket. While there continue to be different theories about who should be blamed for Jaiswal’s sacking, former Indian cricketers Sanjay Manjrekar and Irfan Pathan got into a heated argument on Star Sports channel’s post-day show.

Manjrekar felt that Kohli should have responded to Jaiswal’s call and accepted the single as he was running at the end of the danger. However, Pathan disagreed and said Kohli was also at risk of being run out at striker’s end as Jaiswal’s shot was quite harsh.

“The ball was moving slowly, I don’t think Kohli would have been out. It was Jaiswal’s decision. A risky run perhaps, but he was at the most dangerous end, not Kohli. It was a school mistake on Virat’s part that he looked back and.” “If it had been a bad decision by Jaiswal, he would have been out in the non-striker’s side,” Manjrekar said.

Irfan, on the other hand, countered Manjrekar’s version and said Kohli was probably not confident about taking the run as he saw how quickly the ball was going to fielder Pat Cummins. The former India all-rounder also claimed that as a non-striker, Virat also has the right to reject a run if he feels it is risky.

The two former cricketers even overlapped at times, prompting Manjrekar to even say, “If you don’t want to let me talk, it’s fine.”

Manjrekar even lost his temper when Irfan continued to express his opinion. He said, “Irfan Pathan’s new interpretation of whether it is a run or not should be included in the coaching manual.”

Later during the discussion, Manjrekar even attributed Kohli’s dismissal to the “guilt” he must have felt after playing a role in Jaiswal’s dismissal.

“Kohli’s dismissal was also probably due to the guilt he had in his heart over Jaiswal’s exit. Till then he was allowing deliveries from outside but lost his concentration after leaving,” he said.
