Fans also demanded a farewell Test match for the cricketer, insisting that he deserves a grand farewell, similar to Sachin Tendulkar. “Ash Anna deserves a farewell like Sachin Tendulkar at Chepauk Stadium,” one of them said, while another wrote, “Ashwin definitely deserves a farewell game before retiring. Ashwin deserves a fitting farewell. This is the most significant retirement by a player after Sachin.”

Some fans also shared lighthearted memes while reacting to the news. Here are some of them:

“This will be my last year as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level. I feel there is still a bit of batting power left in me as a cricketer but I want to express that and show it in cricket at the club level,” he said in a post-match press conference after India’s fourth Test match against Australia.

Hug with Virat Kohli

Speculation about Ashwin’s retirement began even before his announcement when cameras captured him in an intense conversation with Virat Kohli while the cricketers waited during a rain delay. The two were later seen hugging and Kohli put his arm around Ashwin as they sat.

Ashwin shot to fame in 2011 and played a crucial role in India’s World Cup win. He has taken 775 wickets across all formats throughout his career. With 537 Test wickets, he is only behind Anil Kumble’s record of 619 for India. The spinner will play for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025.
