India captain Rohit Sharma criticized for his angry reaction to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal of Marnus Labuschagne in the Boxing Day Test, latest news, video

India captain Rohit Sharma has come under fire after he directed his anger, rather than support, at young prospect Yashasvi Jaiswal after he suffered a key loss in Australia’s second innings in the Boxing Day Test.

With the Aussies reeling from an 11-4 defeat after 22 balls, India hoped to strike against the last recognized batsman in the hosts’ line-up.

But when Marnus Labuschagne passed the ball to Jaiswal after 46 minutes, the youngster dropped a relatively easy catch, marking his second blunder of the day.

Rohit’s reaction was one of anger, he immediately threw his arm in frustration and then stared down at Jaiswal.

Bowler Akash Deep also reacted angrily, showing a pattern of lack of support from the Indian players towards their promising young teammate, but it was the veteran captain who was criticized by several pundits.

“I have to be honest, I don’t like this reaction from the Indian captain,” Mike Hussey said on Fox Cricket.

“I appreciate he is emotional and desperate for wickets, but you are the one who has to send the message of calm and support. No one has any intention of dropping a catch.

“He’ll feel bad enough if he makes a catch, especially someone like Marnus Labuschagne, it happens quickly, it’s in, it’s out. You don’t have to see that as a young player.”

Australian star Alyssa Healy added: “Especially when you need him to go out next to you and open the bat to score a few runs and try to win a Test match for your country.”

Unfortunately for Jaiswal, he missed another, much bigger chance just before tea, going close but failing to dismiss Pat Cummins.

Rohit had recently told his young protégé to “stay down”. This time his reaction was more muted, but he still stared blankly at Jaiswal.

It’s a frustrating time for the captain, who scored scores of 3, 10, 6 and 3 in this series after missing out on the opening win in Perth.

Former state level wicketkeeper Darren Berry tweeted: “You have to feel for Jaiswal dropping three catches today. He could have wasted three crucial chances in the game and in the series.

“His only answer is a game-winning innings when his chance comes later today for India. Needs a pat on the back from his older players who won’t be insulted.”‍️
