BLOOMINGTON – Indiana Football wanted to make a statement to the College Football Playoff Committee as the group is just a week away from finalizing the first-ever 12-team playoff round.

The No. 10 Hoosiers (11-1; 8-1 Big Ten) did just that with a 66-0 victory over Purdue, the most statistically lopsided game in program history.

These three statistics illustrate how dominant a win is:

  • Indiana allowed 67 yards of total offense against Purdue. According to the school’s sports information department, they were the fewest yards of total offense allowed by IU since at least 1958. According to the team’s media guide, it was also the fewest yards Purdue ever had in a game – 71 yards against Ohio State in 1970. This was only the second time since 2000 that IU held an FBS opponent to fewer than 100 yards. The Boilermakers had not been limited to fewer than 100 yards in a game at least in 1997.

  • Indiana only allowed five first downs in the win. It was the fewest the Hoosiers had allowed in a single game – Eastern Illinois in 2019 and Minnesota in 1958 – since at least 1958. It was just the seventh time since 2000 that an FBS opponent had fewer than 10 first Downs had.

  • The Hoosiers’ 66-point victory margin was the largest against an FBS opponent in program history. Their largest margin of victory over Purdue before Saturday was a 45-point win in 1988. They were just one missed field goal away from tying the record for most lopsided victory in the overall series, which Purdue set in 1892 with a 68-0 victory . It was IU’s first shutout in the series since 1945.
