College Football Playoff Rankings Reveal, Tuesday, 7 p.m., ESPN

Indiana football is safely in the College Football Playoff. Or is it?

The Hoosiers (11-1) did their job in the Old Oaken Bucket game, scoring all sorts of style points by dismantling Purdue 66-0. A loss in Miami helped their cause, but Ohio State’s home loss to Michigan didn’t do them any favors.

If IU finishes 11th or 12th in the final rankings, it could be left out. The top four seeds go to conference champions, even if those teams are not ranked in the top 12. It’s possible that the Big 12, ACC and/or top Group of Five conference champions are not in the top 12, potentially putting pressure on Indiana to be at the bottom of the list.

The final CFP rankings will be released on December 8th at 12:00 p.m. ET.

Nos. 5-8 in the final CFP rankings will host teams Nos. 9-12 on campus the weekend before Christmas.

How many teams are participating in the 2024 College Football Playoff?

For the first time, 12 teams will make the CFP field.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The eight teams seeded Nos. 5 through 12 play in a first round, with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other locations designated by the higher seed institution (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8.). The games will take place on December 20th and 21st.

The top four conference champions to earn a spot in the bowl-hosted quarterfinals. This is done taking into account historical bowl ties and then taking rankings into account. No. 1 plays against the 8/9 winner, No. 4 against the 5/12 winner, No. 2 against the 7/10 winner; No. 3 against the 6/11 winner. The games will take place on December 31st and January 1st. The quarterfinal games are the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl.

The semifinals will be played on January 9th (Orange Bowl) and January 10th (Cotton Bowl). The national championship game will take place on Monday, January 20, 2025 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
