Is Whole Foods coming to Hoboken?

News

There could soon be a new food option in downtown Hoboken. On Tuesday, Dec. 17, the Hoboken Planning Board unanimously approved a comprehensiveness review for a new Whole Foods in the former Walgreens at 101-105 Washington Street. The proposed project is a Whole Foods “Daily Market,” a smaller offshoot of the grocery giant that fits the space and the city. It’s worth noting that this is a first step towards Hoboken Whole Foods and not an endorsement: The project would still need to be approved at a full planning board meeting. Read on to learn more about the potential Whole Foods offerings in Hoboken.

So does Hoboken get Whole Foods?

On social media, local account Hoboken Gossip posted that Hoboken is getting a Whole Foods deal. Rumors about the matter had been circulating for weeks, but on December 17, the project’s plans came to fruition at the Hoboken Planning Board meeting.

At that meeting, the Hoboken Planning Board conducted a site plan review for the proposed Whole Foods. This involves the committee reviewing an application to ensure that all required documents, information and any other required details are included. Once an application is complete, it can proceed with the review process.

Accordingly View of Hudson CountyThe property’s attorney, Thomas Garlick, shared some details about the plans: “It’s not really a full-blown supermarket. It’s what Whole Foods calls a ‘daily shop.'” He continued, “It matches the interior of the store.”

What is a “Daily Shop” Whole Foods?

Whole Foods opened its first Daily Shop in New York City earlier this year. Christina Minardi, Whole Foods’ executive vice president of Growth + Development, described the location as “specifically tailored to the needs of an urban market like New York City” and called it “an entirely new shopping format to better serve New Yorkers.”

Unanimous approval of the project

Despite some initial errors in the paperwork filed, yesterday’s meeting resulted in unanimous approval from the Hoboken Planning Board, meaning Whole Foods can move on to a full Planning Board hearing. Per View of Hudson County“Board Secretary Patricia Carcone said they need to address other matters such as 914-930 Monroe Street before they can schedule a full planning board hearing for the Whole Foods project.”
