It has been reported that space debris may have burst in the sky over the southern United States

People across the southeastern United States and Midwest reported seeing fireballs streaking across the sky Saturday evening.

Videos show the event, and many speculate what it might have been: asteroids? Meteors from the Ursid meteor shower? Drones?

The last meteor shower of the year peaks just before Christmas

While the Ursids meteor shower peaked on Saturday evening on the winter solstice, the cause is most likely attributed to space debris dissipating in Earth’s atmosphere.

The American Meteor Society received 120 reports of the fireball in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and as far south as Missouri.

Online reports suggested the debris could have come from a Chinese space satellite that was expected to break apart on Saturday evening.

There is no official information about the cause of the possible space debris.
