It’s likely to snow on Thursday, followed by a wintry mix/ice

Iowa Weather: There is more chance of snow and ice for the rest of the week

But that’s nothing compared to what’s coming tomorrow night. EXACTLY. YES. IT WILL NOT BE THAT COLD TOMORROW NIGHT, BUT THEN WE WILL FACE THESE PROBLEMS. We’re just warming it up enough to see that mixed amount of precipitation, something we haven’t dealt with yet this season. So this is the first time we’re seeing this again as we move deeper into this winter month. That’s definitely how it feels this morning. TODAY, MORNING SNOW COULD STILL BE TAKEN ALONG AND SOUTH OF THE I-80 CORRIDOR ON FRIDAY, AFTER THAT WE’LL REALLY SEE THE IMPACT ON THE ROADS. A wintry mix and ice expected to return to the state. STILL IN THE EVENING. However, I can’t rule out the afternoon. A little earlier and also bleeding to death overnight and early Saturday morning. BUT ALWAYS AFTER SATURDAY IT’S ONLY TO RAIN. NOW SATELLITE AND RADAR SHOW THAT MORE LIGHT PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED OVER THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE STATE, BEWARE IN THE WEST. We see this darker shade of blue moving across Carroll County toward Guthrie Center. This could mean a little more snow sticking to some roads. IT DOES. That’s not the case yet, but we can’t rule it out as the morning progresses. KEEP AN EYE. This is definitely the more impressive spot with light snowfall. AND IN THE SOUTH AGAIN MAINLY ONLY LIGHT BUILDINGS. If anything, we are still fighting the dry layer we have over us. DES MOINES SKYCAM SHOWS PRETTY CLEAR CONDITIONS. I DON’T SEE ANY SNOW ON THE STREETS HERE IN THE DOWNTOWN OR AROUND THE SUBWAY. HOW WE SEE THESE TEMPERATURES. It’s very cold to start with single digits for more than half of the state. In the southwest you can see teenagers, but in the north you can see almost zero degrees. BUT WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE WITH MORE OF THESE REALLY COLD TEMPERATURES THROUGHOUT THE MORNING. NO BIG WARM UP TODAY SO YOU WILL NEED TO STAY BOXED UNTIL 8:00 AM. We could still see a little more of that band of light snow moving through southern Iowa at 12 this afternoon. If anything, it will only be cloudy. THIS CLOUD COVER breaks apart overnight. Now let’s talk about Friday. As the morning progresses there will be more clouds settling into more of these pink tones. You have to watch out for them appearing on the screen. GO TO THE EVENING TIME FRAME. This is Friday, 6 p.m. If you have plans after work, you will have to contend with these slippery road conditions. Over time they get worse and worse. 6:00 AM TO 10:00 AM. I’m starting to see more of those pink tones that are the freezing rain we’re expecting again, warm air higher up in the atmosphere. WE ARE STILL VERY COLD AND BELOW FREEZING HERE ON THE SURFACE, SO RAIN WILL FALL AND FREEZE WHEN IN CONTACT WITH HARD SURFACES. This will produce ice across the state. NOW LOWER IN SATURDAY, VERY EARLY MORNING. It’s 2am and we’re already starting to see the transition to rain as warm air moves in more from the south. So it’s going to be a transition period as that transition goes from snow, sleet, freezing rain to severe rain as we go through all of Saturday morning and then Saturday afternoon, but then in the evening some cold air tries to rush back INTO NORTH IOWA. There could be more snowfall in the forecast. This is Saturday evening as it transitions from rain back to snowfall. NOW WHAT’S GOING ON TODAY, JUST SNOW IN THE MORNING, OVERLY CLOUDY SO THE CLOUD COVER WILL BREAK UP LATER TODAY BUT IT WILL NOT WARM UP AT ALL. Teenage highs. WARM UP TOMORROW. But that gives us the problem of freezing rain later in the day. FRIDAY. Until Friday evening and early Saturday morning. THEN WE WARM UP ENOUGH TO SEE RAINFALL ACROSS MOST OF THE STATE. And then we dry on Sunday. We’re still warm. HEIGHT IN
