“It’s not always the better team that wins”: Joshua Kimmich remains optimistic after Bayern Munich was eliminated from the DFB Cup 0-1 against Bayer Leverkusen

Bayern Munich were desperate to advance to the DFB Cup for the first time since the 2019/2020 season – as they defeated Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 to win the competition. However, this time it was The Werkself That got the last laugh and ultimately sent Bayern Munich packing after a 1-0 win in the round of 16 at the Allianz Arena.

While the result is undisputed, Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich feels his side were hit hard despite Manuel Neuer being a man behind after a red card in the 17th minute.

“The better team doesn’t always win. “Everyone who watched the game must have compassion for us and the way we played today,” Kimmich said after the game in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Considering the opponent, today was our best performance of the season. The first title is gone, which hurts and is annoying. When I look at the results in the top games, it’s sobering. But I still think we’re on the right track.”

Kimmich could have a point as Bayern managed to dominate possession and outpace Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen while playing with ten players for most of the game. However, possession of the ball means nothing if it doesn’t lead to good scoring opportunities, which in turn means nothing if you can’t put the ball in the net. Bayern failed to achieve either against last season’s Bundesliga champions.

A bitter defeat for Bayern, but as we have already seen with Kompany’s team, a tough defeat is often the catalyst for growth and improvement. Let’s hope this happens again.
