Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart help the Knicks pull off an ugly win over the Magic

Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart help the Knicks pull off an ugly win over the Magic

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Knicks showed they can win ugly.

After the undermanned Magic blew the game and the referees gave a flurry of whistles, the Knicks took advantage of their talent advantage by defeating the Magic 108-85 on Friday night, giving them their sixth straight victory.

It was a snoozefest with free throws galore, challenge scores, misses and zero flow.

But after the Magic managed to stay competitive for two and a half quarters, the Knicks finally separated themselves behind Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson and ran away in the final quarter.

Brunson dropped 26 points with nine assists and played well in Orlando for the second time this season.

His podcast partner Hart scored a season-high 23 points and 13 rebounds, arguably his best performance of the season.

Hart thrives in the dirt and Orlando wreaked havoc by committing 23 personal fouls.

The Knicks (21-10), who have won 16 of their last 20, made 34 free throws, 14 more than their average.

Hart had 10 of them alone.

And New York won comfortably despite making just four 3-pointers on 15 attempts, an anomaly in today’s NBA.

For the Magic (19-14), the strategy was understandable.

They played for the second straight night without three of their best players – Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Moe Wagner – who are all out due to injuries.

Jalen Suggs, the determined Magic guard, tried to overcome this disadvantage with 27 points.

But he was also part of the foul fest, quickly racking up five points of contact and only playing 26 minutes.

The Magic didn’t have anyone who could score reliably.

As the momentum grew toward New York in the third quarter, the away fans took over the Kia Center and chanted, loud and loud, “Let’s Go Knicks.”

For most of the second half it was MSG South.

This was the third time in December that the Knicks faced the Magic and the third time that they defeated them.

But any notion of a walk in the park for the Knicks quickly disappeared as Suggs poured in 18 first-half points and the teams went into halftime tied at 54.

It was physically demanding and dragged out by an avalanche of whistles, including a flagrant foul on Suggs, who had elbowed Towns in the mouth.

In contrast to the Magic, the Knicks were able to avoid serious injuries and were in the same lineup for the 28th time.

That certainly helped as New York overcame a dud from Karl-Anthony Towns, who was once again in foul trouble – a recurring theme in recent weeks – to score 16 points and eight rebounds in 33 minutes.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau, meanwhile, expanded his rotation to nine.

Landry Shamet, fully recovered from a shoulder injury sustained in the preseason, logged significant minutes for the first time this season and performed well.

He dropped seven points with a steal on 3-for-4 shooting.
