The Django Unchained star recalled visiting a doctor in Atlanta who simply gave him a cortisone shot before sending him on his way. “What the hell is that? I don’t know if you can make Yelps for doctors, but that’s half a star,” he quipped.

Luckily, his sister Deidra Dixon took control and brought him to the facility that would eventually give him answers. He remembered her saying, “That’s not my brother.” She got him in the car and drove around before getting to Piedmont Hospital because Jamie said, “She had a hunch there were some angels there. “

There, Dixon learned that her brother “had a brain hemorrhage that resulted in a stroke” and that he could die if he didn’t receive immediate surgery. “My sister knelt outside the operating room and prayed the whole time,” he said.

The procedure went so well that the doctor told Jamie’s sister that he “may be able to make a full recovery, but it will be the worst year of his life.” The dream girl star confirmed that it was exactly that. Here, another family member — his daughter Corinne Foxx — stepped in to shield him from the public, and Jamie told her to “cut everything off.”

The Grammy winner became visibly emotional as he explained: “They didn’t want you to see me like that. And I didn’t want you to see me like that. I want you to see me like that.” He recalled waking up in a wheelchair in a Chicago rehab center on May 4, barely able to comprehend that he had suffered a stroke.

At the conclusion of the special, he recalled the difficult recovery process and said he had “lost everything.” He realized that the only thing he could hold on to was his sense of humor. He ended the set by thanking the audience and his family for their support before singing: “Thank you for my body. Thank you for my soul.”
