Jaxon Smith-Njigba has a real chance of breaking multiple Seattle Seahawks franchise records

Seattle Seahawks fans might look back on 2023-2024 as a rare era in franchise history, especially when it comes to the wide receiver position. The top three receivers for Seattle these two years are DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. However, the latter could already be well on his way to becoming the best of the three receivers. In fact, Smith-Njigba has one for 2024 very realistic chance of breaking both the Seahawks record for single-season receiving yards and the record for single-season receptions.

Metcalf currently holds the single-season receiving yards record with 1,303 yards (in 2020). Meanwhile, Smith-Njigba is currently at 994 yards. That’s just 309 yards shy of the record with three games to go. For Smith-Njigba to break that record, he would need to average 103 yards per game. This is easier said than done, but still very achievable.

Smith-Njigba could be even closer to breaking the single-season receptions record. Lockett currently holds this record with 100 catches, also in 2020. Smith-Njigba currently has 85, just 16 catches away from breaking the record. That means Smith-Njigba needs an average of just over five catches per game to break the record.

To illustrate how achievable these records are, let’s look at what Smith-Njigba averages in each game. In 14 games, Smith-Njigba is averaging 71 yards/game and six balls per game. If we break this down since Week 9, Smith Njigba is averaging 101 yards/game and seven receptions/game.

Overall, if Smith-Njigba keeps up his pace from Week 9, he will easily break Lockett’s record, and he will come awfully close to breaking Metcalf’s receiving yards records. If he can do this over the next three weeks (against Minnesota Vikings, @Chicago Bears and @Los Angeles Rams), then Smith-Njigba’s 2024 season would rank as the best statistical season ever in yards and receptions for the Seattle Seahawks Wide receivers.

And all of this in just his second year in the league.
