Jaylen Brown’s mother’s Wellesley home broken into: report – NBC Boston

It appears Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown may be the latest professional athlete to be targeted by thieves.

The investigation is ongoing, but a source familiar with the situation says police in Wellesley, Massachusetts, found a broken window at Brown’s mother’s home on Sunday. Now they are investigating and looking for the person responsible.

Aside from the broken window, police said it did not appear that anything was disturbed inside the home and nothing was taken from the home. Brown was not home at the time, but his mother and nephew were.

Brown was not home at the time, but his mother and nephew were. The Celtics were in Washington, D.C. for a game against the Wizards at the time of the incident.

Wellesley police said in a statement Thursday morning: “We are aggressively investigating this burglary, as we do all residential burglaries. We continue to encourage residents to use their home security systems if they have them.”

NBC10 Boston spoke with a neighbor who said he overheard the break-in attempt.

“It was Sunday. We had just returned home after celebrating the holiday in the city,” she said. “My children were inside. I went back to the car to get some things and heard glass breaking.”

“It was really scary,” the neighbor added. “My 3-year-old son was eating in the kitchen, and when you hear about things like this you usually think they happen in the middle of the night.”

Sources also tell us that Celtics assistant coach Amile Jefferson’s Newton residence was broken into on Sunday.

Newton police said they responded to a report of a break-in at a residence Monday afternoon. No one was home at the time and it was said that a bunch of jewelry had been stolen from the house.

And these may not be random actions. Several professional athletes have struggled with slumps recently, including Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and Milwaukee Bucks tight end Bobby Portis.

Both the NBA and NFL have warned players about the growing threat. Citing FBI intelligence, the NBA specifically linked the crimes to “transnational South American theft groups.”

At this time, it is uncertain whether these incidents are related, but the Globe reports that Brown was suspended from practice on Tuesday due to the incident. He practiced on Wednesday and appears to be on track to play against the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night at TD Garden.

The Celtics issued a statement Thursday morning saying, “The safety of the Celtics players, families and employees is of the utmost importance to us. We are aware of the incident and are cooperating with the authorities. The team will have no further comment at this time.”

A league spokesman contacted Thursday about the two incidents involving Celtics players told NBC10 Boston: “We are deeply concerned about the reported break-ins in Boston.” NBA security officials are in contact with the Celtics and all relevant authorities, to offer our full support.”
