Jerod Mayo heard fans calling for him to be fired. This is how he reacted.

At the final whistle the chants could no longer be ignored.

As the New England Patriots walked off the field after their embarrassing 40-7 home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, few fans were left calling for head coach Jerod Mayo’s job.

“Fire Mayo! Fire Mayo! Fire Mayo!”

Mayo’s rookie season in New England was a tough one. But calls for Mayo’s job were largely limited to Internet comments and calls to sports talk radio. Saturday’s loss represented a new low. The fans at Gillette Stadium worked together to echo that refrain throughout the team’s home field.

After the game, Mayo was asked if he could hear the chants – and how he felt about them.

“Look. You hear these things,” Mayo said. “But at the same time, they’re paying to sit in these seats and we have to play better. If we play better, we don’t have to listen to it.”

The loss drops the Patriots to 3-13 this season. After a narrow loss in New England last week brought positivity, Saturday’s performance took the air out of the room.

What does this mean for Mayo’s job status? The seat is hot. However, Mayo and his staff are currently expected to return next year.

Nevertheless, the pressure is great. But Mayo says this is nothing new.

“I’m always under pressure. It’s been like this for a very long time. Not until I became head coach of the Patriots. I’m fine – look, I always do what’s best for the team.”
