New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo wasn’t interested in finding a glimmer of hope after Saturday’s lopsided 40-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

“What I told the players: You can’t take anything good from the game,” Mayo said after the game.

New England has lost six straight games and is 3-13 this season. The Patriots have also been outscored 94-45 in their last three games.

The Chargers opened Saturday’s game with 17 straight points while New England didn’t get into the game until less than two minutes into the first half. Los Angeles went into halftime with a 20-7 lead and never looked back as the Patriots went scoreless in the final two quarters.

New England was only able to muster 181 yards on offense and converted just two of 10 chances on third down. Mayo’s team also failed to capitalize on all three chances in the fourth half.

Rookie quarterback Drake Maye completed 12 of 22 yards and a touchdown and was sacked four times. Maye briefly left the game to be checked for a head injury but was able to return.

Despite the struggles New England experienced during its inaugural season under Mayo, it doesn’t look like a head coach change is imminent. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that the first-year coach is expected to be back in 2025, barring “some misfortune” at the end of the 2024 season.

Expectations weren’t particularly high for the Patriots entering the year, as they finished a 4-13 season in 2023 and selected Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 draft.

There are a few reasons for optimism going forward, starting with the rookie signal-caller. Maye has thrown for 2,276 yards and 15 touchdowns, compared to 10 interceptions in 11 starts.

Cornerback Christian Gonzalez, New England’s first-round pick in 2023, has also shown promise in his first two seasons in the league. Entering Saturday’s action, Gonzalez recorded 58 tackles and 11 passes defended along with two interceptions.

However, Mayo did not focus on being optimistic after Saturday’s heavy defeat.
