James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr., a naval officer, Nobel Peace Prize winner and peanut farm operator who became governor of Georgia and later the 39th president of the United States, has died at the age of 100.

Carter, the longest-living former American president, died at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, December 29, according to his son.

He served as president for one term from 1977 to 1981, but is equally known for his humanitarian service, having left Washington, D.C., working for Habitat for Humanity and negotiating peace agreements.

After leaving office, he continued his volunteer work for decades until he entered hospice care in February 2023.

Called Jimmy rather than James throughout his political life, Carter was a prominent figure in Democratic politics both during and after his time in the White House.

As president, he emphasized human rights in his foreign policy, championed environmental protections when they were not yet popular, and appointed a record number of women and people of color during his time in office.

Do you know how much I raised to compete against Gerald Ford? Zero. Do you know how much I raised to run against Ronald Reagan? Zero. Do you know how much all the presidential, Senate and House campaigns are raising this year? 6 billion dollars. That’s 6,000 million.

How writing a book together threatened the Carters’ marriage

“Everything to Gain,” a 1987 collaboration with his wife Rosalynn, became “the worst threat we have ever faced in our marriage,” a stubborn standoff for the Camp David Accords broker and Nobel Peace Prize winner.

I think it’s based on racism. Many in this country feel that an African American should not be president. … No matter who he is or how much we disagree with his policies, the president should be treated with respect.

I think this breakthrough by Barack Obama is remarkable. When he gave his speech (on race) in Philadelphia a few months ago, I cried. I sat in front of the television and cried because I saw this as the most insightful and transformative analysis of racism and its possible end that I have ever seen in my life.

Fundamentalists have become increasingly influential in both religion and government, managing to transform the nuances and intricacies of historical debate into black-and-white severity and personal degradation of those who dare to disagree. … The influence of these various trends poses a threat to many of our nation’s historic customs and moral commitments, both in government and in houses of worship.

War can sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn to live together in peace by killing each other’s children.
