Last month, the NFL warned players about the troubling crime spree.

PEOPLE obtained a copy of a memo the NFL sent to its teams’ security directors and the players’ union warning of organized criminals targeting the homes of professional athletes.

The memo sent by the NFL informed recipients of the perpetrators’ strategy in finding targets and suggested players take increased privacy measures, such as waiting to post on social media until after they have left a location and installing advanced security systems.
