John Mayer and Shawn Mendes discuss having famous exes write songs about them

John Mayer and Shawn Mendes agree that famous exes have had songs written about them.

Mendes recently guest starred on What is life like with John Mayer? on SiriusXM, where he and Mayer discussed the unusual phenomenon of a song about them appearing in the world. Mayer has been known to date Katy Perry and Taylor Swift in the past, while Mendes has had relationships with Camila Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter.

Swift’s hit is believed to have been in 2010 Dear John is about Mayer. More recently, it was rumored that Mendes was the inspiration for Cabello’s June gloom and Carpenter’s songs Sharpest tool and taste.

“No one will understand,” Mayer says, although he acknowledges that he and Mendes “will be generously rewarded for the things we have to deal with.”

“You and I both speak as people who have heard songs that are, at least other people say, a reference to us.”

Mendes agreed. “It sucks to feel like that… It’s a weird feeling when you’re being written about and maybe the whole picture isn’t being expressed.” The two agreed that it wasn’t usual to sit on the therapist’s couch speak, so it can be quite a lonely experience.

“You’re talking to a therapist and you’re like, ‘Have you ever seen your ex-girlfriend on a billboard?'” Mayer jokes. “‘Let me tell you, it’s been a strange two weeks.'”

Still, Mendes says the fear that something like this could happen again isn’t enough to stop him from potentially falling in love with another musician.

“The suffering that comes with hearing a song talk about you in a way you don’t want to talk about isn’t nearly as nice when you first fall in love with someone,” he says . “The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that no one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone.”

It’s not the first time that the two have had an intensive conversation about their life in music. They got together in October to discuss the pressures of touring.
