Josh Groban Tried to Recreate His LA Family Christmas in NYC Last Year (Exclusive)

Even though the climate in December is completely different in Los Angeles and New York, the place where the Groban family gathers for the holidays brings magic.

Josh Groban chatted with PEOPLE at Little Big Town’s Christmas at the Opry on Oct. 4 and shared his favorite recent holiday memories.

Groban says he always celebrates Christmas at his parents’ house in Los Angeles. Last year, however, his family had to make an adjustment while the 43-year-old played his Tony-nominated title role Sweeney Todd on Broadway.

“Everyone came to New York, and we tried to recreate that in my apartment,” he says. “It was a nice memory because we were all in a new place together and it was snowing.”

In general, Groban’s favorite part of Christmas is “being together.” Growing up, he says, he had “really fun Christmases,” thanks in part to his mother’s love of decorating. Most important to him, however, is the opportunity the vacation gives his family to come together.

“As children it’s like we’re taking a break from school, but as adults…” . . “My brother and I both travel so much for work that (Christmas) is a time of year where we can all sit around the table and just all be together and let the world disappear for a little bit,” he tells PEOPLE.

The multi-hyphenate also has other vacation plans this year. His CBS Christmas special Josh Groban and his friends go home for the holidayswhich airs December 20 at 9 p.m., will feature appearances from him, Jennifer Hudson, Tori Kelly, James Bay and The War and Treaty.

The special will also highlight the American foster care system. The show will feature a family adopting a child.

“I am honored and excited to host a show with friends old and new to celebrate the unity and togetherness of the holidays,” Groban wrote in a statement. “It’s especially important because it spreads the word about the importance of adoption and showcases the most incredible children.”

“I can’t wait for everyone to watch with their families, sing along and hopefully make room in their hearts and homes for a child who needs one,” he said.
