A few hours after announcing his retirement from international cricket in all forms, R Ashwin will board the flight home. It is understood that India’s leading off-spinner is already at the airport (at the time of writing) and has been given a fond farewell by the members of the Indian cricket team.
Due to the lack of time and the constraints of his flight, a full get-together or dinner was not possible.
“Everyone said nice words to him, talked about him and gave him a very nice and emotional farewell. Yes, he’s only flying out of Brisbane this evening and due to lack of time, a proper team meeting wasn’t possible. “Hotel,” says a well-informed source.
Ashwin accompanied Rohit Sharma to the post-match press conference where he announced his retirement quite shortly. There were emotional scenes in the dressing room afterwards as the legendary cricketer delivered a speech that brought tears to most people’s eyes.
“The international cricketer in me may have come to an end, but the cricket fan in me will never have an end. I look forward to each of your appearances and all the best,” said a very emotional farewell.

He received a special jersey from opposing captains Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon. There were lots of hugs and handshakes as he left the press conference area, and everyone had the same shocked look on their faces. Apparently no one saw this coming, except Ashwin who seemed to realize it. So much so that he left the team hotel just hours after his international career of over 14 years ended.
