Just nine days after marrying Gregg Allman, Cher filed for divorce

Till Death Do Us Part certainly doesn’t mean what it once did. After marrying Greg Allman just days after her previous marriage dissolved, Cher filed for divorce just nine days later.

Speaking in her book The Memoirs, Part OneCher laid it all out, including the reasons behind her rash decisions. According to her, Cher was already involved in a relationship with Gregg Allman when she was divorcing Sonny Bono.

Despite her reservations about Allman, she knew she had to get married. She spoke to People magazine about her pregnancy with the rocker. “I lived each day as it came. Then I found out I was pregnant and we decided to get married.” Her terms were that he owed her the stability of a marriage because she was now pregnant.

However, it didn’t last long and Cher filed for divorce just nine days after the marriage. The whole thing was already crazy, and Cher noticed the shock her friends showed at the choice. She looked back at the wedding and remembered how unromantic it was.

Not the match made in heaven that Cher wanted

Jumping into marriage because of a child was not a good idea. According to the New York Post, Cher filed for divorce after just nine days because she found a plastic bag containing white powder. Afterwards, however, the two made amends and tried to make things work for the child.

But as time went on, Allman became increasingly addicted. His paranoid delusions and addiction were not good for Cher or her child. So Cher filed for real divorce in 1979, four years after her marriage. Despite his repeated visits to rehab, she knew he couldn’t kick the addiction.

Cher noted that he tried despite his addiction. “He kept going to rehab, kept trying to get clean, kept trying even though he had failed in the past. Instead of thinking about my own exhaustion, I was able to empathize with him in that moment.” But after showing signs of paranoid delusions, Cher decided to divorce him and protect herself and her son.
