“What kind of person do you have to be to do something like that to a young actress who’s just trying to figure it out?”

In the early years of her career, Kate Winslet hasn’t forgotten how painful it was to be body shamed.

As she reflects on her rise to fame 60 minutesthe Oscar-winning actress recalled the tabloid coverage that followed her TitanicThe success was great – reporters examined her body on many occasions.

“It was absolutely horrific,” Winslet said after the show played an old clip of commenters discussing her dress size. “What kind of person do you have to be to do something like that to a young actress who’s just trying to figure it out?”

When asked if she ever had the opportunity to confront any of the body-shaming reporters, Winslet replied: “I actually got to have a face-to-face conversation lee The actress became emotional and burst into tears as she recalled the encounter.

She continued: “It was a great moment because it wasn’t just for me, but for all the people who were subjected to this harassment. It was terrible, it was really bad.”

Winslet was 22 and just establishing herself in Hollywood when she landed the role of Rose DeWitt Bukater opposite Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack Dawson. Now, at 49, the actress has developed a thick skin and is not afraid to defend herself in the face of unfair double standards. Winslet noted that to this day she receives comments about how her body appears in new projects.

“People say, ‘Oh, you were so brave for this role. You didn’t wear any makeup. You had wrinkles,’” she recalls. “Let’s say to the men, ‘Oh, you were so brave for this role. Have you grown a beard?’ No, we don’t.”

She added: “It’s not brave. It’s about playing the role.”

Despite all the negative comments, Winslet has maintained that the industry – and the way people talk about women’s bodies – has begun to change for the better. In 2021, she attributed the change in this attitude to the #MeToo movement and women’s “inherent sense of connection to one another.” While chatting with The GuardianShe said she observed the changes herself when she revised newspaper articles written about her in the late 1990s, when she was just 19 years old.

“It was almost ridiculous how shocking, how critical and downright cruel tabloid journalists were to me,” she said. “They commented on my height, they estimated my weight, they printed out the supposed diet I was on. It was critical and terrible and so upsetting to read. But… it also moved me so… so much.” How different it is now.
