Kate Winslet opens up about being fat-shamed as a ‘young actress’

During her Sunday session on CBS News, a visibly emotional Winslet shared that an interviewer once said it looked like she had been “melted and poured into a dress on the red carpet.” “It was absolutely horrific,” the Blackbird actress recalled, adding, “What kind of person must they be to do that to a young actress who’s just trying to figure it out?”

Asked if she ever came “face to face” with her critics, Winslet said, “I left it up to them.” “I said, ‘I hope that haunts you.’ It was a great moment. It was a great moment because it wasn’t just for me. It was for all those people who were subjected to this harassment. It was terrible. “It was really bad,” the Wonder Wheel actress said.

Winslet further elaborated on the incident when a former teacher said to her, “‘Now listen, Kate. I’m telling you, darling, if you want to look like that, you’re going to have to settle for the fat girl parts.'” “I’ve never been fat before,” she exclaimed, laughing. The Ammonite actress further shared that she channeled the criticism into “quiet determination.”

“It made me think, ‘I’ll just show you — real quiet,” Winslet said of the harsh criticism she received for changing. The Hollywood veteran went on to criticize the industry’s unrealistic beauty standards.

“People say, ‘Oh, you were so brave for this role. ‘You didn’t wear any makeup.’ You know, ‘You had wrinkles.’ Let’s say to men, ‘Oh, you were so brave for that role.’ You grew a beard?’ No, we don’t,” she said, adding that she no longer cares about other people’s opinions because it’s too “exhausting.”
