Kyle McCord breaks ACC single-season passing record in Holiday Bowl win

Kyle McCord finished his first and possibly final season at Syracuse with a record-breaking performance.

The former Ohio State quarterback threw for 453 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions in the Orange’s 52-35 win over Washington State in the Holiday Bowl on Friday night, becoming the ACC’s all-time rushing leader in a single season.

McCord also dramatically broke Deshaun Watson’s eight-year-old record by connecting with Darrell Gill Jr. for a 50-yard completion on the first play of the second half. Watson set the previous record in 15 games, while McCord only needed 13 games.

McCord finished his season with 4,779 yards, the highest mark among FBS passers, as well as 34 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Friday’s win over Washington State marked the seventh time he threw for at least 350 yards in a game this season, a feat he never achieved at Ohio State.

Behind its productive transfer quarterback, Syracuse finished the season 10-3, giving it ten wins for the second time since 2002. The Orange were ranked 25th in the final regular season US LBM Coaches Poll.

After serving as Ohio State’s starter during the 2023 season and leading the team to an 11-1 regular season record, McCord entered the transfer portal. He described the move as a “business decision.” The Dispatch reported that he would have been the leading candidate to be the Buckeyes’ starter in 2024, but coach Ryan Day and his staff did not reassure the New Jersey native that he was a fit for the role.
