Kylian Mbappe writes Champions League history with his goal against Atalanta

Kylian Mbappé made his name in the Champions League history books when he scored the goal against Atalanta.

Real Madrid, in 24th place in the Champions League standings, traveled to Italy desperately needing three points. Los Blancos received a significant injury boost with the return of Vinícius Júnior, but it was Mbappé who opened the scoring for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

The France international received a great ball from Brahim Díaz on the edge of the box and then got past Marten de Roon with a touch of his left boot. Mbappé then sank a right-footed shot to give Real Madrid a 1-0 lead.

At the age of 25, Mbappé has now scored 50 goals in the Champions League. The goal is only his second goal in the white jersey in European competition, but his past success with Paris Saint-Germain was enough to see him climb into the rankings of the tournament’s all-time top scorers.

The Frenchman is now the tenth best goalscorer in Champions League history. He has more UCL goals than other legends of the game, including Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Sergio Aguero.

Mbappé needs just one more goal to draw level with Thierry Henry and 11 more before he cracks the top five. He may be far behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at the top of the goalscoring list, but his career with the most victorious club in Champions League history is only just beginning.

The striker has faced a lot of criticism since arriving in Madrid, but after failing to score for almost a month, Mbappé has found the net four times since returning from the international break in November.
