Large waves are adding to concerns along the San Diego coast

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) – With a high surf warning in effect in San Diego County through Christmas Day, concerns about impacts to natural and man-made structures along the coast remain at the forefront.

On Friday, December 20, the City of San Diego posted a report on X, formerly Twitter, about a partial closure of Sunset Cliffs Natural Park due to a damaged seawall.

The closure will be between Adair and Osprey streets, the city said.

“The city has found it necessary to close the path leading to the bluff west of the northernmost parking lot on the SCNP linear section during the winter storm season,” Jose Ysea, the city’s public safety media services director, said in a statement told FOX 5/KUSI on Tuesday.

He added that this was a “public safety shutdown.” Photos posted on X last Friday showed a barrier around the affected part of the cliff.

The area is expected to remain closed until further notice and crews will monitor the seawall for further damage, the city said.

Meanwhile, Ysea said concerns remain about existing and possible new damage to the Ocean Beach Pier, which remains closed indefinitely.

The 58-year-old pier has been closed since October last year due to damage from high surf. A new design of the replacement was presented at a series of public meetings to receive input from the community.

The high surf warning is in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday and is expected to bring large waves of up to 10 feet and sinkings of up to 13 feet, according to the National Weather Service.
