Two Lawrence High School students have received national YoungArts awards recognizing them as promising creatives of their generation.

Junior Lola Brown, a student of Angelia Perkins, won for photography. Senior Adele Erickson, a student of Todd Poteet, won for painting.

They were selected because they demonstrated “exceptional technique, a keen sense of artistry and an exceptional commitment to advancing their craft,” according to a YoungArts press release announcing the 2025 cohort.

The award is competitive – according to the press release, approximately 800 winners were selected from nearly 11,000 applications across various art disciplines nationwide.

“We hope this recognition gives these young people the encouragement to continue pursuing their artistic pursuits and the assurance that YoungArts will be there as a source of support and community for the rest of their lives,” said Clive Chang, president and CEO of Release YoungArts.

Each winner will receive $250 and will be eligible for professional development support, grant opportunities, collaboration with national venues and cultural partners, and travel to art intensives through YoungArts.

Famous artists who have been previous winners include Daniel Arsham, Jon Batiste, Terence Blanchard, Camille A. Brown, Timothée Chalamet, Viola Davis, Amanda Gorman, Denyce Graves, Josh Groban, Judith Hill, Jennifer Koh, Tarell Alvin McCraney, Andrew Rannells, Desmond Richardson, Jean Shin, Hunter Schafer and Shaina Taub, the press release said.

Erickson’s work was also selected to be displayed on the side of the Kansas National Education Association building in April.
