Lewisville ISD votes to close five elementary schools

The Lewisville ISD Board of Trustees voted to close five elementary schools due to declining enrollment and budget issues.

The parent meeting on Monday evening was packed ahead of the vote to save their schools.

The schools that will be closing are Owen Elementary, Creekside Elementary, Garden Ridge Elementary, Highland Village Elementary and Polser STEM Academy.

All votes were unanimous except for the closure of Highland Village Elementary, where one board member voted no.

The board also voted to update school enrollment limits.

It’s the same in several North Texas school districts. And it’s never good news for parents, students, teachers and support staff at the affected schools.

The district is struggling with a $4.5 million budget deficit and declining enrollment.

At a school board meeting last month, trustees heard pleas from parents and some students at two of the targeted schools to keep them open.

Before the vote, board members addressed the crowd and thanked them for their words and passionate commitment to this fight. They admitted that this decision was not easy.

Several board members encouraged the crowd that the fight is not over and continues in Austin as the new legislative session is set to begin in January.

The closures would be effective for the 2025-2026 school year.
