Liam Lawson reveals Max Verstappen’s support after Red Bull F1 promotion

Liam Lawson is expected to move to Red Bull in 2025, where he will drive alongside four-time F1 champion Max Verstappen following the departure of Sergio Perez. While discussing his impending move, Lawson reflected on the support he has already received from Verstappen.

Lawson has been part of the Red Bull Junior Program since 2019, a springboard that has nurtured his talent across various racing categories. He showed his potential early on by taking the Toyota Racing Series title in his home country, which paved the way for further success in Formula 3 and a commendable third place in the 2022 Formula 2 season.

His consistent performances earned him the opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, where he will replace the injured Daniel Ricciardo at AlphaTauri, now known as VCARB.

Now that he takes the top spot at Red Bull, his main goal aligns with what many in his position are after: winning a world championship. He explained during an appearance on Red Bull’s Talking Bull podcast, as quoted by GPBlog:

“Of course, as Formula 1 drivers we all have a common goal and that is to win a world championship. That’s my goal.”

“That’s been my goal since I was a kid and wanted to be a Formula 1 driver and now I’m obviously in a great position. This is definitely not what I expect when I come in. I don’t expect to come in and go straight on away and win a World Cup.

“I know the goal of the team is obviously the designers and that’s what I’m here for. I’m here to help make that happen. But for me personally, it’s obviously about getting into a competitive position as quickly as possible. “Obviously I have the best teammate that I can learn from.

As for his relationship with Verstappen, Lawson has already benefited from the Dutch driver’s support in previous racing classes. He added:

“Even when I was in Super Formula and other categories, I think Max is someone who just loves motorsport and watches a lot of it. He is someone who was always friendly and supportive when I came as a reserve last year.”

“When I obviously felt a lot of pressure at Zandvoort, he was someone really easy to talk to. So yeah, it’s cool to compete against him and have him as a teammate. There is no one better to learn from. So, for me it’s about being competitive as quickly as possible.”
