Lincoln takes the lead

Lincoln takes over from its 39 with 1:55 minutes to play. In the final minute it goes into the red zone. A field goal would win the game.

Akili Smith Jr. throws a 15-yard TD pass to Courtney Miller Thompson with 20.6 seconds left in the game. Fantastic diving catch. Lincoln leads 34-27 with 20.6 seconds left.

With two passes to Rosenthal, Newbury Park got to the Lincoln 42 with 4.0 seconds left in the game.

Smigiel is released on the last move of the game.

Lincoln gets to the point

Lincoln looks for a first goal from the Newbury Park 5 with 3:15 minutes left in the game.

The Panthers score a TFL on first down. The ball was pushed back to the 9. 2:45 minutes left.

Incomplete on second descent.

Blake Bryce’s sack on third down sets up fourth-and-goal from the 15-yard line. 2:27 to play.

Miracle for Lincoln. The fourth down pass goes through a Newbury Park player and finds a Lincoln receiver on his back for the touchdown.

Panthers turn it around

With less than seven minutes to play, Newbury Park enters Lincoln territory.

But the Panthers lost their third fumble of the night with 5:01 to play.

Lincoln takes over with a deficit of 27-21.

Newbury Park leads 27-14 after three quarters and leaves the field on third down, but the short punt hits a Panther in the helmet. Lincoln retrieves the muff at 36 Newbury Park.

Cam Joy’s 2-yard TD run five plays later put Lincoln within 27-21 with 9:47 left.

Smigiel’s third TD pass

Three plays after Blake Bryce retired Akili Smith Jr. and Michael Guzman recovered for Newbury Park, the Panthers struck.

Smigiel’s 25-yard shot to a flying Shane Rosenthal gave the Panthers a 27-14 lead. The PAT was wide.

Pacifica is the regional champion!

Pacifica rose to 3-4 as the Division 2-AA Southern California regional champion and travels to Mission Viejo on Friday to play for its second state championship.

“We’ve come a long way,” head coach Mike Moon said on Spectrum 1. “Let’s win state!”

Pacifica won Division 2-A in 2019. Now they’re trying to win a state title in Division 2-AA.

Pacifica will play Sacramento-Grant for the CIF-State Division 2-AA State Championship Bowl on Friday at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.

“We’re young, but we have ballplayers everywhere,” said quarterback Dominic Duran.

TRITONS AHEAD

Five years after Pacifica became the first public school in Ventura County to win a state championship, the Tritons are returning to the CIF state championship.

The Tritons advance to the Division 2-AA State Championship Bowl with a 37-20 win over Harbor City-Narbone.

Pacifica scored 17 unanswered points after Narbonne tied the game at 20-20 on its first possession of the third quarter.

Pacifica is having a special evening

After Isaiah Dillon hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Duran to retake the Tritons’ 27-20 lead with 2:30 left in the third quarter, special teams slammed the door.

Budder Aina scores Pacifica’s third blocked punt with 8:30 minutes remaining. Jeremiah Penny gets a muff back at the ensuing kickoff. Tritons take control.

The Panthers lead at the break

After two sharp punts, Lincoln decides to go for it on fourth-and-11 from its own 41 with 2:41 left in the half. The turnover on downs hits the San Diego Section Open Division champions again.

Smigiel hits Rosenthal for a 15-yard gain and sets up a 2-yard Smigiel TD run with 8 seconds left in the San Diego half.

At halftime, Newbury Park leads Lincoln 21-14.

Smigiel to Cofield for another NP lead

Newbury Park forces a punt. It has a shaft. Second straight punt shaft for Lincoln. The Panthers will take over Lincoln territory on the 40th.

On the next play, Smigiel hits Drew Cofield for a 40-yard scoring shot, giving Newbury Park the lead again.

14-7 Newbury Park, 5:18 second quarter.

Narbonne connects it with Oxnard

Narbonne took over the second half kickoff and tied the game with a 4-yard TD run by running back Mark Iheanachor, an SMU signee.

Pacifica blocked the PAT to make it a 20-20 tie with 6:30 left in the third quarter in Oxnard.

Lincoln ties the game

On third-and-11, Lincoln quarterback Akili Smith hits Isaiah Grant for a 40-yard scoring strike.

Lincoln tied the game 7-7 with 6:37 left in the first quarter.

Pacifica leads by 6 points at halftime

The Tritons play to the Narbonne 5-yard line 12 times in the final two-plus minutes, but with only 3.6 seconds left in the half for 3rd-and-goal, they face another field Goal satisfied.

Magana scores from 22 meters away.

Pacifica leads Narbonne 20-14 at halftime.

The Panthers strike first in San Diego

Due to the three personal fouls before the game, Lincoln kicks the ball from its own 15-yard line. With the return, Newbury Park can begin its first ride on the Lincoln 35.

Four plays later, the Panthers took a 7-0 lead after Brady Smigiel sent a 20-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open tight end Blake Bryce.

Narbonne benefits from takeaway food

Pacifica QB Dominic Duran’s strip sack sets up Narbonne at the Pacifica 16 with 3:41 left in the first half.

Really tough call on Pacifica safety Max Magana with an end zone PI and great coverage gives Narbonne a first down and a goal at the Pacifica 8.

Creates a crucial Narbonne score. A 5-yard TD run by Jamari Ladd is followed by a conversion run by Jaden O’Neal.

Pacifica’s lead is cut to 17-14 with 2:12 remaining in the first half.

Keith Smith, Cameron Rising, Chris Czernek, Daniel Priesto, Jordan LaSecla… the list of outstanding Newbury Park quarterbacks is long and impressive.

Wayne Cook, the first Ventura County quarterback to start a Rose Bowl game, is in San Diego tonight to support the Panthers.

Another block helps Pacifica extend the lead

Max Magana creates another blocked punt for the Tritons in plus territory.

Pacifica converted the short field into a 31-yard field goal by Isaac Magana to take a 17-6 lead with seven seconds left in the first quarter.

Tonight is the night

The high school football season continues tonight for two Ventura County teams.

CIF-Southern Section Division 2 champion Newbury Park and CIF-SS Division 4 champion Pacifica will play for spots in the CIF state championship.

Newbury Park (14-0) will visit San Diego-Lincoln (10-2) in the CIF-State Division 1-AA Southern California region at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. Kick-off is 8 p.m

Pacifica (10-4) hosts Harbor City-Narbonne (7-6) in the CIF-State Division 2-AA Southern California Regional at 7 p.m.

The winners will get to play in the CIF State Championship Bowls on Dec. 13 at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.
