125: #16 Luke Lilledahl, PSU vs. Gage Walker, Mizzou

1st game period: Luke, U17 and U20 world gold medalist and complete newcomer, enters the individual round first. Walker does a good job stopping Lilledahl from scoring. Even better: Walker is behind and scores the first points of the game with a takedown! Comes about halfway through the period. Lilledhal is immediately out and shoots in, but Walker defends again, this time in a neutral position. Lilledahl is back and this time he finishes his shot and leads 4-3 with about 30 seconds left in the game. Lilledahl manages to make it 4:3 after 3 minutes.

Game 2: Walker is also a true freshman and takes the place of Noah Surtin, who unfortunately had to cut short his career due to injuries and recently retired. Walker chooses below. Lilledahl stops the first two escape attempts and now has over a minute to drive, but shortly afterwards Walker gets up and is free. The score is 4-4. The period ends neutral, still 4-4.

3rd third: Lilledahl reaches the final point. Walker gets a chance to run down the RT clock. He gets it to 49 seconds before Lilledahl can escape and the score is 5:4 in his favor. There are 90 seconds left in regular playing time. 60 seconds. Footage of both wrestlers. No stable calls yet. And then the buzzer sounds: Lilledahl wins the first fight of the day 5:4!

133: #7 Braiden Davis, PSU vs. #32 Kade Moore, Mizzou

1st third: Davis comes out big in the first 30 seconds! There will be no lat drop for the true sophomore, but there will be early fireworks for the fans. The action gets going again quickly, there are some wild exchanges, Davis almost had a Peterson but Moore almost held it out but eventually Davis overpowered and got the takedown. Davis holds a leg turk, goes to the chancery hold on the hand and starts collecting in close. Davis grabs the back ankle and gets a bow and arrow that matches the leg turkey, and Moore is just trying to survive at this point. Davis couldn’t get into position for a fall, but will take a 7-0 lead after the first period.

2nd period: Davis rides for 30 seconds, but then looks like he accidentally got into a full nelson, so he gives up a penalty point. So it’s 7-1, but Davis is still on top. The ball on the left is held for Davis, but it is described as potentially dangerous because the short leg was in a precarious position. Moore is unable to break free and Davis will take a 7-1 lead with 3:39 left in the third period.

3rd period: Davis goes neutral for a bonus point win. If Davis takes one down, he gets three more to take a 10-1 lead. Davis is still looking for the nearside cradle, but that doesn’t happen, so he cuts Moore off. Shot from space for Moore, but Davis caught it in time and then turned back to take a 13-2 lead. Now it’s 13-3 as Davis goes for the kill. He won’t get the technique, but he will get the long-locked driving timing to win 14-3!

141: #3 Beau Bartlett, PSU vs. #13 Josh Edmond, Mizzou

1st period: NCAA finalist Bartlett for the Nits, two-time qualifier Edmond for the Tigers. Two very fast, very powerful wrestlers on the mat. Straight to the double for Edmond, Bartlett parries it. No points after one minute. Limited action for the next 60 seconds. Bartlet shoots Edmon out of bounds with 50 seconds left and Edmon is convicted of stalling. It’s a warning, just his first. Edmond comes forward with another shot, but Bartlett’s stone hips stop that shot cold. There are no points for the rest of the game and we get double goose eggs until the second time.

2nd third: Bartlett reaches the final point. He’ll be out quickly, so delete the bagel from his side of the scoreboard. 1-0 Beau. One more minute, still 1-0. 30 seconds, lots of circling. Now Bartlett fires a shot and follows up, catching a leg as he attacks again. Edmon reaches out and is able to fend off Bartlett, who goes out of bounds in the final seconds of the period. Still 1-0 in Beau’s favor, one ahead of Edmond.

3rd period: Edmon grabs his hip after the whistle and turns to flee after about a second. That’s the speed of Edmond! So 1:1, travel time doesn’t matter. However, this stall warning is of great importance. With one minute left there are no more points. 30 seconds left and Bartlett pushes Edmond to the edge. Edmond is playing with fire. But he makes it to the end of regulation. With a 1-1 draw we go into extra time!

Sudden Victory: 30 seconds in Edmond fires a blast double but Bartlett is so strong and he stops Edmond and now he attacks again. Bartlett enjoys these counters and is immediately on the right track. Edmond fights back, but Bartlett takes the return leg and wins in overtime! Or is it? Edmond says there was a singlet pull and there comes the rock from Coach Smith and the Tiger corner. And the call remains. No singlet pull. Bartlett wins 4:1!

149: #2 Shayne Van Ness, PSU vs. Zeke Seltzer, Mizzou

1st Period: Van Ness, who took third place as a freshman but then missed most of last season due to injury, gets the first takedown towards the end of the period and takes a 3-0 lead over Seltzer. Van Ness puts a hammerlock on Seltzer and turns it into a bow and arrow. And he does it with some brute force, forcing Seltzer’s shoulders to the mat for a first-third fall! SVN via pin!
