Saturday marks only the fourth time ever that two iconic brands will meet and the game will be played at an iconic venue.

However, UConn and North Carolina brands don’t play on a basketball court, and their football programs – which don’t have a long track record – take place at Fenway Park in Boston, the oldest major league baseball stadium in the United States.

Entering play, the Huskies are the more stable program, and a win in the Fenway Bowl would mark only the third time in program history that the team has won nine or more games in a season.

The Tar Heels are gearing up for the Bill Belichick era and will turn to former Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens to take over interim leadership for the bowl game following the firing of Mack Brown. North Carolina is looking to bounce back from postseason opprobrium after losing each of its last four bowl games.

Bill Belichick is not expected to play in the bowl game

New North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick is not expected to play in Saturday’s Fenway Bowl against UConn.

UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said Belichick didn’t want to be a distraction, which is why he wasn’t present at any of the team’s bowl practices.

“People are excited about the future,” Cunningham told ESPN. “We talked about how college sports are really changing. The idea of having Bill and someone with his background in professional sports join us is something we are all excited about. That’s our goal, and it’s good to be an early adopter.”

Interim coach Freddie Kitchens will lead the Tar Heels against the Huskies.
