Live Updates: Police are investigating the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson

The early-morning murder of a top health insurance executive in midtown Manhattan has unleashed a wave of anger and frustration among social media users over the denial of their health insurance claims – a public expression of Americans’ pent-up anger over the country’s complex health insurance industry.

A glaring example is a Facebook post from UnitedHealth Group expressing sadness over the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Received 62,000 reactions – 57,000 of them with laughing emojis. UnitedHealth Group is the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, the division led by Thompson.

A source told CNN that there have been concerning threats against UnitedHealth Group, although Thompson’s name was not mentioned.

Almost immediately after news broke that Thompson had been killed, social media users began posting about their frustrations with UnitedHealthcare and other insurance companies.

Their stories could not be independently verified by CNN.

TikTokker and anesthesiologist Brian Fehller said in a video that the shooting was “tragic for him, tragic for his family, of course, but this raised some bigger issues.”
