Liverpool 2-0 Manchester City: What does a win at Anfield mean for the title race?

Only three teams have ever won the title after finishing 11 points or more behind the leaders – Arsenal in 1997–98 and Manchester United in both 1992–93 and 1995–96.

“I don’t think there’s a way back for Manchester City now,” said former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher after the game at Anfield.

However, City boss Pep Guardiola did not win the title.

“I said before this game that we are not in a position to think about goals, but the season is long,” he said.

“We have to think about getting results and then some players will come back and then we will be better and maybe believe in it. There are many things we have to fight for and we will try.”

City are notoriously strong finishers – and have only lost a total of four Premier League games after Christmas in the last three seasons.

If they won their last 25 games they would finish with 98 points, while Liverpool’s continued form over the rest of the season would see them finish on 99 points.

Carragher said: “At the moment I would imagine Man City will lose four or five more games between now and the end of the season.”

“I think it’s almost a bit of a crisis at Manchester City. I think it’s reminiscent of Liverpool two years ago and I think City could be fighting for the top four.”

City have not failed to reach the Champions League since 2010/11 and former defender Micah Richards described the current situation as “grim”.

“I won’t rule City out completely because football can be like that, but I can’t see them catching Liverpool,” he admitted.
