Jose gets in touch: “I just wanted to note that Diaz and Dias are pronounced the same way in South America and southern Spain, but in the rest of Spain Diaz is pronounced like “Diath”. So we would say “Diath” for the Liverpool player and Dias for the Manchester City player.”

“I don’t sleep as well as I did when I was winning every game. I am the same person as four Premier League players in a row and in this situation I have the same doubts. Now I want to be closer to the players because I know they are suffering, I know they are thinking: “Oh God, how could we not win the game against Feyenoord?” Or: “Why don’t we score when we beat Spurs had a chance to score?” They suffer. What can I do, blame them? Absolutely not.”

preamble

OK, that’s huge. Certain games early in the season – and this is still pretty early in the season – generate too much hype, but with Manchester City wobbling – and wobbling – and Liverpool flying, this is a huge game. Could the distance between the two be 11 whole points? These would be shades of 2019-20, when Liverpool stormed into the Premier League. All eyes are on Pep Guardiola, who scratched his head too much the other night and whose media appearances since Tuesday’s 3-3 draw with Feyenoord have given the impression of a harried man. Arne Slot has taken on the role of laid-back entertainer, making gags about Mo Salah while so many others are disastrous, and his team seem capable of multiple gears. City, meanwhile, don’t even seem to be able to finish the games at all. However, they can’t afford to lose this and the great teams will always find a way. Now it’s time for them to stand up and be counted.

Kick-off is at 4pm UK time. Join me.
